Elin speaks about her practice:
“When I work, it’s somehow as if I need as much resistance as possible. I don’t draw before I cut into cardboard or bubble wrap, or when I scrape images. Somehow, I’ve felt that the pencil slips away from me – the drawing somehow runs away from me – but the oil gives me the resistance I need.
I also believe that one should give back to Mother Earth through effort. So I use very coarse canvas. I don’t have any particular working method. For example, the cats: first I made four, then twelve. I bought frames three times, until Karl Åge frames them properly.
I have made the first Faroese artwork about menopause and deterioration using my expansive ink line. Some motifs break me down, but then other motifs rebuild me, and some make me laugh.
Yes, it’s an eternal struggle. I must suffer, I must become death-weary.
At schools in Denmark I touched on design, cartooning, sculpturing - both free and with models. I also had sculpturing at evening school at home. Otherwise I have mainly received education in oil painting, primarily from Peter Holch, who said he had given me what is like 50 Years of education.”
